Director: Dustin DeWitt
The international system is in a state of anarchy. Over the pass few centuries countries have been increasingly turning to treaties and IGOs to try and establish some order in this system. The International Court of Justice(ICJ) being the legal organ of the United Nations seeks to resolve disputes by interrupting treaties, international custom, general principles of law and pervious judicial decisions. In this community you will be one of the Judges that make up the ICJ. You will be assigned one topic to be researched. This topic will be a case that has been heard, is in the process of being heard or will soon be heard by the ICJ.
Temple of Preah Vihear (Cambodia v. Thailand):
The Temple of Preah is an ancient shrine located on the borders of Cambodia and Thailand. The grounds of the temple hold artistic, archaeological and possible military value. The high Dangrek Range forms a natural boundary between the two countries. The temple is located on top of this natural boundary. The present border was determined in treaties negotiated in 1904-7. The treaties determined that the boundary would follow a specified watershed line at the Temple of Preah gave the area to Thailand. But French maps indicated the Temple of Preah to be apart of Cambodia. Once Cambodia gained independence from France it instituted the present case before the ICJ. In a pervious case the ICJ ruled that the Temple belonged to Cambodia. This has been disputed by Thailand and violence has broken several times since this decision. Once again this case is about to come in front of the ICJ. In this case you are requested to interpret the Judgment of 15 June 1962 in the case concerning the Temple of Preah Vihear.
